Basketball for life project.

Vision; “Basketball for life and a drug free child Community”

The proposed project focuses on advocating against drug abuse especially amongst street children. Basket ball is to be used as a tool of bringing the children together and as they enjoy the sport, we impart values of responsible livelihood pointing much against child abuse.

Problem Statement;

Drug usage amongst children is noticed to be increasing especially in urban areas amongst Street Children. They are seen taking in intoxicating drugs such as; Marijuana, Kubah, Petro sniffing, “mairungi/mira”, alcohol and others just to feel “high”.  The short and long term effects on these children include;

• Mental health problems; A number of street children noticed to addicts to drugs have been found to have mental health problems. Having a problem reasoning normally or even doing things irrationally even when at a time hasn’t taken any drugs.
• Involvement in CRIME. Cases where children involved in using drugs have been arrested several times in different criminal offences such as; theft, vandalism, fighting, homicide cases, rape, defilement and many others.
• School dropout increase. Many children are being expelled from school over drug usage while others have voluntarily left school and gotten involved in non profitable ventures.
• Through smoking especially, infections have been reported like; lung cancer which makes consumption of drugs very hazardous for the children.
• Dropping of personal ambitions and dreams. With such addictions, children are reported to have lost focus to their life dreams. And have no morale or courage to continue with these dreams that were once a reality to achieve.
  

  Basket for life project target group;

• X-Street Uganda’s Basket ball for life projects mainly focuses on street children of ages up to 18 years. Not only shall we focus on the street children, but also those in school and drop outs from school interested in the program but are below ages; 18.
  

  Basic Objectives of the Basket for life project;

• Advocating against child abuse and encourage sports for life.
• Promote talent and skill of basketball as a sport.
• Life skills development.
• To encourage team Work and Collective responsibility.
• Child education sponsorship scheme development.

        Feasibility Study;

• There is reach and contact of many street children already having training sessions with X-Street Uganda.
• We have professional basketball coaches readily available and committed to the project.
• A qualified team is available to handle both administrative and other project management duties. A team of volunteers and interns is joining X-Street in the project.
• We are in partnership with other organizations with related objective on the cause especially with concern of a child.
• Courts and venues where sessions can be held are readily available for any project.
• There is great passion and love for basketball as a sport noticed amongst the children.

  Monitoring and Evaluation of the Project;

  The performance management of this project shall be reflected in the annual reports that shall be handed in annually to the Committee. The responsible parties shall be held accountable for all the project activities.

  A midterm evaluation shall be conducted this will facilitate assessment of the project as regard to its performance that is its capacity to fulfill the set objectives. This will facilitate mid course corrections to improve achievements in the remaining project period.

  A terminal evaluation shall be conducted which will reflect the internal and external assessment of the effects and impact generated by the project. This will be done just after the project ends. This shall also act as a result monitoring tool through which the target population of children or group shall respond to the impacts of the project. That is provision of a sustainable change to the target group.
